Looking west showing the main platform. Note the two-arm semaphore with its two-way lamp at the lower end of the mast which was hauled up to the position of the red and green glass spectacles for night operation on the platform. The railway line reached Penrith in 1863 with the original station being erected on the down side of the station in 1863. It was replaced by this brick and stone building in 1880. The up platform was not built until 1890 following the duplication of the railway line in 1886.
