John Lucas built a holiday home at Lapstone and requested that a platform be built so as to provide access to his home. The Lapstone Zig Zag was constructed in the 1860's to allow trains to overcome the obstacle presented by Lapstone Hill. Zig zags are a technique used by railway builders to gain height, but require trains to reverse up one of the zig zag's three legs.
