To obtain education at the tertiary level, a pupil had to be sent to England or overseas. Until about 1839, when there came into existence records of a non-denominational school at St Marys. At the school, 29 students received elementary education. On May 16 1861, a formal 'Application for the Establishment of Non-Vested School at St Marys' was despatched to the Commissioners of the National Board of Education. It was accepted. Further details.
