These steps gave train travellers access to John Lucas's holiday home from Lucasville station which was built at John Lucas's request. The Lapstone Zig Zag was constructed in the 1860's to allow trains to overcome the obstacle presented by Lapstone Hill. Zig zags are a technique used by railway builders to gain height, but require trains to reverse up one of the zig zag's three legs.
