The foundation stone of St Stephen the Martyr was laid in 1837. An example of early Gothic Revival, the building was constructed with buttressed brick walls, paired pointed windows set in pointed recessed arches, and a crenelated tower. The first minister was the Reverend Henry Fulton. The interior of the church was redesign by William Kemp in 1860 and further alterations were made by Cyril Blacket in 1906, This view shows the church prior to the cement rendering of the exterior, carried out as part of Cyril Blacket's alterations in 1906.
