John Donohoe was the son of John and Mary Donohoe from Kildare who had arrived in NSW on the Escort in 1858. Their children Michael, John and Mary travelled with them. Mother, Mary died in 1868 and John in 1894. Michael Donohoe married Justina Blattman and later her sister Ellen. John (1848-1916) married Frances Cross (1855-1936) in 1871.
