After being held in a camp during the war, Brenda Stuart returns to her late husband's stately home in the Pennines, to be reunited with her young son. A factory-worker's daughter from Manchester, Brenda doesn't belong in such wealthy surroundings - which her father-in-law never lets her forget. Her baby boy is nowhere to be seen. Brenda's only ally is Prue, her beloved sister-in-law who has problems of her own. She has fallen in love with an Italian POW who works on the family estate.
