The Bicentennial of the First Fleet on January 26th 1988 was a watershed moment in Australian history. With part of the country swept up in celebration, it also gave impetus to the largest gathering of indigenous people ever seen in Australia. The protest that occurred on that day instigated mass public debate about the concept of Australian history, the position of Aboriginal people in contemporary society and their sheer determination to be heard. It signaled in an era of change and the beginning of true reconciliation, reminding white Australia it had a black history.
