Rescue services in NSW were facing reorganisation/restructure and the the Nepean Rescue Organisation, also known as the Nepean VRA (Volunteer Rescue Association), were being disbanded. The oral history project was undertaken to record the history of the organisation and the work it carried out within the Penrith area.

The Nepean Rescue Organisation were involved in assisting at road traffic accidents, river incidents and the Granville train derailment that brought down the Bold Street overpass (commonly known as the Granville Train Disaster) in 1977. John Buchtmann was one of the founding members of the group.
