Lorna Parr interviewed Effie Smith, a long-time resident of Castlereagh, at her home in Edinglassie (Emu Plains, NSW). Effie (nee Wright) married Ron Smith and they ran a diary farm at Castlereagh. Effie speaks about the changes in diarying in the district - from hand-milking and carting the mail to the railway station, early mechanisation and the formation of the Nepean Dairy Company. The farm was sold to the Emu Gravel Company, which bulldozed the lot.Effie also speaks about the war years, being a founding member of the Castlereagh branch of the Country Women's Association (CWA), being a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, about living in Castlereagh and electricity arriving from the Hawkesbury Development Company. Effie's great-great-grandfather was John Lees, who formed the Methodist community in Castlereagh.
