Subject: The novel 'Bengala, or some time ago' was written in 1860 - one of the earliest novels published with an Australian setting. The author spent five years in Australia, from 1840 to 1845. She arrived in the colony with her husband Francis and their three sons, along with Francis's brother George. Throughout 1840 and 1841 Francis Vidal performed parish duties at Penrith and South Creek, and their fourth child was born in 1841 at Minchinbury. Mary Vidal, the author of eleven books and mother of seven children, died in 1871.
