Captain James Dixon was a Yorkshireman from the village of Skelton and afterwards Whitby in the Cleveland district. Records in the Tasmanian archives show that his ship 'Skelton', Captain Dixon in command, arrived from Leith on Monday 27 November 1820. He sailed to Port Jackson on 5 January 1821 and 29 January 1823 and returned to England on 5 September 1823. In 1822 his 'Narrative' was published in Edinburgh.
