The text was written in the nineteenth century by an observer and journalist, Charles Tompson, who was a correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald. His work has been edited by the late Janice Johnson. It gives a first-hand account of what life in Camden was like in the mid 19th century. The book is an important record because Charles Tompson reported in 'real time', making his collected contributions a 'primary source'. Content includes the impact of the Gold Rush, the vulnerability of farming to the weather and disease, the construction of St John's Church and the early schools in Camden, and the development of a criminal justice system.
