This booklet is a list of Aboriginal names, compiled by the late W. W. Thorpe and published by the Australian Museum in 1921. It contained 300 place names. These were increased to 750 in the second and third editions. It was increased to 1500 words and published under the present title. This booklet provides in alphabetical order a list of Aboriginal place names and Euphonious words. In the introduction it states: It is not claimed that the meanings given are scientifically accurate. Most of the words were recorded by missionaries, officers of Government departments such as the police, surveyors, and registrars, and by people interested in the natives, few of whom had any linguistic training for such specialized work. This booklet includes the word: Yandhai - meaning for Nepean River; Yarramundi meaning deep water; mulgo meaning for black swan.
