Religious holidays and calendars : an encyclopaedic handbook

Kelly, Aidan A.1993
Books, Manuscripts
As school curricula become more multicultural, holiday reference collections become less adequate. This handbook will help fill in some of those gaps by providing information on the calendars and holidays around the world. Included are all of the major religions as well as minor ones and newer organizations, such as the Church of Scientology and neo-paganism. The book has two parts: an essay section discussing calendar systems and an alphabetical catalog containing brief, ready-reference information on nearly 300 holidays. Entries are brief; indexes by religion, month, and subject provide access. The subject index is especially useful, as it ties together the alphabetical entries with the more detailed information in the essays. Alice Van Straalen's The Book of Holidays around the World (Dutton, 1986) is more inviting for younger readers but does not provide as much information. Holidays and Anniversaries of the World (Gale, 1989) is more comprehensive but also far more intimidating to less sophisticated readers. Though some information certainly overlaps with these and other existing resources, libraries will find Kelly's title useful for its broad coverage and ease of use.
