Books, Manuscripts
The study included: a) a review of the literature on biological control of alligator week b) A visit to the USA; i) to discuss biological control of alligator weed scientists, ii) to review the George Vogt archives at the Smithsonian Institution, iii) to observe the thrips Amynothrips andersoni in the field (c) a visit to Argentina; i) to discuss biological control of alligator weed with Dr Hugo Cordo, UDSA Laboratory, Buenos Aires, ii) to observe alligator week growing in its native range, iii) to determine the logistics and costs of undertaking research in Argentina. (d) Preparation of this report.
Queensland CSIRO Entomology 1998.
In preparation for the submission of recommendations for further research on biological control of alligator weed in Australia CSIRO Entomology received a small grant to collect and collate all available information. Part of this process was a visit made to USA to: (a) speak with scientists that have been involved with alligator weed biological control (b)review the archived files of Dr George Vogt, the deceased USDA scientist who conducted exploration in South America for natural enemies of alligator weed during the 1960s (c) obtain copies of unpublished reports relating to those surveys (d) assess the potential of the alligator weed thrips, Amynothripss andersoni, which has been released in USA. The aim of this report (a) to present a precis of all available information concerning biological control of alligator week (b) to suggest further research to improve biological control of alligator weed in Australia. Appendices I - Documents obtained -- Appendix II - Vogt Archives -- Appendix 3 - Logistics and cost of working in Argentina -- Appendix 4 - Contacts.
