Bored by the tedious perfection of Olympus, the gods seek to amuse themselves by playing games with the lives of mortals. Aphrodite asserts that the power of human love will triumph over even the worst the gods can inflict: Apollo, confident that love is frail, accepts her wager. His gaming piece is Diomenes, an Achaean healer; hers, Cassandra, a Trojan princess.
