The conference was an integral part of the process of deriving a Biodiversity Conservation Strategy for New South Wales, the state with the longest history of occupation by Europeans on the Australian continent. The impetus behind both the conference and the Strategy was to evaluate threats to biodiversity both within a state and national context and to review and foreshadow the range of measures needed to counter these threats.
