Since the 1983 edition, there has been a great deal of taxonomic work resulting in major revision of several groups and the naming of many new species; extensive field work has also been done on the ecology and distribution of numerous species. Because of the complex nature of the changes, it is not presently possible to publish a new edition incorporating all such information, but a supplement is available from the author, giving more detail.
