The calcutta was commanded by Captain Daniel Woodriff. It set sail on 26 April 1803 on an expedition to collect naval timber and to establish a settlement on the northern shores of Bass Strait. The ship spent five months in New South Wales. Woodriffs three sons were listed as midshipmen John, James and Robert, but Robert was discharged before the ship sailed.
