A house divided cannot stand. 14-year-old Joe Brinson is the only child of Heanette and Jerry, a housewife and golf pro living in a backwater town in 1960's Montana. Nearby and uncontrollable forest fire rages and when Jerry loses his job -- and his sense of purpose -- he decides to join the cause and fight the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. It is a watershed moment for Joe who senses his family life is also about to go up in flames. Abandoned by his father and forced into the role of adult, Joe witnesses his mother's struggle to keep her family together and her own head above water.
