Determined to make a difference in her new home, Elizabeth reaches out to one of her students, Rosaleen Sullivan. The young girl refuses to speak and seems paralysed in fear of one of the town's miners, a troubled alcoholic named Wendell Backus. Elizabeth is beginning to piece together why his presence is so troubling to her when suddenly one lunchtime Rosaleen goes missing. Meanwhile Constable Jack Thornton discovers evidence that local widow Cat Montgomery may have been involved in a suspicious church fire. Could the two cases be related?
