Notes:
Decodable text is a type of text used in beginning reading instruction. Decodable texts are carefully sequenced to progressively incorporate words that are consistent with the letter–sound relationships that have been taught to the new reader. The Jolly Readers arefully decodable books so children can read words from their knowledge of the letter sounds in Jolly Phonics. Only a few essential tricky words are used, and these are shown at the front of each book. These readers have a very carefully controlled vocabulary and are specifically designed for children who are learning to read and write. The text in these Yellow Level Books (second level) uses only decodable regular words (words that are made up from the 42 letter sounds taught in the first stage of Jolly Phonics, along with the alternative sound of <y> at the end of words like happy and sunny) and a small number of ‘tricky’ words (frequently used words that are not fully decodable at this stage). All new tricky words and alternative vowel spellings used are shown on the front inside cover. These can be used as a quick practice activity before starting the book. Comprehension questions and discussion topics are included at the end of the book. These ensure that children are not only able to read the text, but also get meaning from it.Light type is used as a guide for those few letters that should not be sounded out, such as the /b/ in lamb.
