1914. Vera - youthful, free-minded and irrepressible, is determined to sit exams for Oxford, against her conservative parents' wishes. She is encouraged and inspired by her brother and friends, particularly the brilliant Roland Leighton. Her hopes for Oxford with Roland turn to dust as war is declared and all the young men enlist. Vera gives up her dreams of writing to become a nurse, and as those closest to her perish on the frontlines, she experiences the futility of war... a powerful story of love, war, loss and remembrance.
