In 1814, a government stockyard was established at Emu Plains, followed by a agricultural farm in 1819. A house was built for the Superintendent which was later named Dungarth. The site of the former entrance to Dungarth is marked by a Plane Tree on the Great Western Highway adjacent to the shopping centre, while the site of the house is marked by a fig tree in the grounds to 4 Stockade Street.
