McCarthy Cemetery was established by early settler James McCarthy, who set aside part of his land for the burial of his daughter Elizabeth in 1806. The land was consecrated as a cemetery by Bishop Bede Poling in 1835. Mary Ann died on 3 December 1876 aged 27. She was married to Richard Waring. Roger Bede was Mary Ann and Richard's son and he died 16 April 1876.
