The houses in Carinyah Avenue were built as the Duration Cottages. During World War II a munitions factory was established in St Marys employing up to 3500 people so houses were built to accommodate some of these new employees. They were given the name of Duration Cottages as they were only intended to remain for the duration of the war, however most are still standing today around their central park.
