The play “Engaged” was a three-act farcical comic play by W. S. Gilbert. It was produced in London in 1877. The plot revolves around a rich young man, his search for a wife, and the attempts – from mercenary motives – by his uncle to encourage his marriage and by his best friend to prevent it. The Q Theatre, located at the old Railway Institute Building in Penrith, performed this play in August and September 1977. It was co-directed by Arthur Dicks and Max Iffland. This photograph shows four couples and a maid on stage.
