The square was the central area around which a range of cottages were built. These cottages were built to house staff working at the nearby munitions factory in St Marys. Walter Bunning, planned this estate on the basis of the concepts developed in Radburn, New Jersey, USA - with all of the houses facing inwards towards a common garden area, and backing onto service roads. By 1950 they were homes used by Eric and Marie Cuckson and their family as well as many of his employees at the Cuckson's zipper factory.
