The foundation stone of St Stephen the Martyr was laid in 1837. An example of early Gothic Revival, the building was constructed with buttressed brick walls, paired pointed windows set in pointed recessed arches, and a crenellated tower. The interior of the church was redesign by William Kemp in 1860 and further alterations were made by Cyril Blacket in 1906,
