There had been a racing track at the current Penrith Paceway site since the early 1920’s, however harness racing didn’t officially begin until April 16 1964 when the first registered meeting was held. Dr Maurice Renshaw worked tirelessly for a long time to secure a trotting licence for Penrith. When the licence was finally given, spectators crowded into the showground for the opening race at 7.30pm.
