When the district opened up, the Nepean River was crossed at a ford, but by the 1820s a punt crossing had been established on the southern side of the present day Victoria Bridge. This continued to operate until the first road bridge was built in 1855. A punt was again used after the destruction of this bridge by the 1857 flood, and after the similar destruction of the next bridge in 1860. It then operated until the new railway bridge was adapted to carry road traffic in the early 1870s. The roads leading to the ferry crossing are still clearly marked.
