On 11 October 1971, a five kilometre section of the new F4 Western Freeway, as the expressway became known, between the Northern Road, Orchard Hills and Russell Street, Emu Plains, and the Regentville Bridge over the Nepean River, was officially opened to traffic. The F4 Freeway became the M4 Western Motorway in May 1992. This view has been taken looking east.
