Farley and Lewers began operating around 1948 extracting gravel from the river. In 1958 the company purchased Eric Boyce's dairy farm on Farrell's Lane at Castlereagh. Farley and Lewers were one of five parent companies involved with the Penrith Lakes Scheme. Victor Canderle is pictured in the back row, second from the left. He was an Italian immigrant who arrived in Australia about 1930. He worked for Farley and Lewers for about 46 years.
