Melrose Hall was built in 1934, opening in December. It was built through community effort and government funding for relief works. Designed by Mr Huon of Lawson it cost of £1300 and was named after C. J. Melrose an Australian aviator who three months earlier had set a record for a solo flight from Australia to England. The Relief Works programme was initiated in response to the depression.
