Michael Long was an alderman of Penrith Municipal Council and was Mayor nine times. He died in 1926. His son James died in 1878 as a young boy. McCarthy Cemetery was established by early settler James McCarthy, who set aside part of his land for the burial of his daughter Elizabeth in 1806. The land was consecrated as a cemetery by Bishop Bede Poling in 1835. It is now located within the Penrith Lakes Scheme.
