Milestone, Great Western Highway, St Marys

1970s
Archives
This is the 29th milestone from Sydney at St Marys. It is situated on the south side of the Great Western Highway between Mamre Road and Princess Mary Street. When the Great Western Highway was laid out from 1814, stone markers were sited along the route to show the distance between Sydney and Penrith. Edward Cureton was paid £163 80 shillings from the police fund to erect 54 milestones on the then named Western Road. This milestone shows the mileage from its location to Penrith. It was removed along with others for cleaning and returned to the same place.
