Victoria Park was originally laid out as a town square in a village subdivision by Maurice O'Connell in 1842. It was enlarged by a local tanner, Alfred Alcock, in 1892. The rotunda, which was built in 1922 as a memorial to soldiers of the First World War. The Park is an important remnant of the former village centre of St Marys, which developed along this section of the highway in the mid-late nineteenth century.
