McCarthy Cemetery was established by early settler James McCarthy, who set aside part of his land for the burial of his daughter Elizabeth in 1806. The land was consecrated as a cemetery by Bishop Bede Poling in 1835. It is now located within the Penrith Lakes Scheme. Margaret Gearn was a native of County Galway, Ireland.
