McCarthy Cemetery was established by early settler James McCarthy, who set aside part of his land for the burial of his daughter Elizabeth in 1806. The land was consecrated as a cemetery by Bishop Bede Poling in 1835. It is now located within the Penrith Lakes Scheme. James McCarthy arrived on the Boddington and settled with his wife Mary on their property Cranebrook House at Castlereagh.
