Built by William Watkins and Peto, Brassey and Betts, the Nepean Railway and Road Bridge was completed in June 1867. In 1883 an iron fence was constructed to partition the bridge for both train and road traffic. By the 1880's the bridge had become known as Victoria Bridge. After the construction of the rail bridge in 1907, Victoria Bridge was only used for road traffic.
