The importance of the vegetable component of Aboriginal diets in both existing traditional societies and prehistoric societies has always been a matter of controversy. Research carried out in the 1960's suggested that, at least in some areas, up to 80% of the food consumed by traditional Aboriginal groups was vegetable food, and that the contribution of animal protein to the diet was relatively small. (Peterson, 1978).
