Andrew Thompson established his tannery, known as St Marys Tannery, in Saddington Street, St Marys in 1881. Andrew Thompson's tannery became one of a number of major tanneries in St Marys, providing regular employment for local men. Andrew Thompson closed his business when he retired in 1915.
