The holiday was observed for the first time with a regatta. The first race was won by Shaw and Hadley, the second by Collyer and Ransley and the third by C Evans and party. Novelty races were conducted - John Gunnell managed the gig and dinghy against a whaleboat, 4 oarsmen, coxswain and the group. There was a 'walking the greasy pole' with the pole 7 feet high and extended over the river. George Digell won the prize. A goose was let loose in the river - there were 11 competitors trying to get it - Gallagher won. The Foresters, whose fete it was, marched from the Lodge to the river.
