Black Nellie - By Sara Shand

Articles
An article about 'Black Nellie', who visited Sara Shand in January 1886. Sara gives information about some of her talks with Nellie; gives the aboriginal names for Nellie and Penrith; and tells of Nellie's description of her first meeting with white people. Nellie also took a young half-caste relative, Angelina, to visit Sara. The article gives various conversations and comments on characteristics of Nellie - her drinking; her moving from living with Mrs Cork to living with Mrs Shand; Nellie reciting a chorus about Mr McCarthy; and telling of places she had previously lived in the area; also of receiving a proposal of marriage from 'Black Jack'; and having Mrs Price offer to provide a box for her when she died. This story was drawn from conversations with Nellie while Sara painted a picture of her.
