This paragraph reports the violent death of James Long, eldest son of Alderman Long, aged 15.1/2 years. James had started out with his gun to meet some friends for a day's shooting. On the way he called at the house of George Clarke, and while talking to him, his gun suddenly went off, entering his upper jaw and removing one side of his face and half his head. Death would have been instanteous. Dr Johnson arrived and pronounced life extinct. The inquest by J K Lethbridge found that he died of a gunshot wound, accidentally inflicted by himself.
