The Great Western line extension from Penrith to Weatherboard (now Wentworth Falls), a distance of 28 miles, was opened for public traffic on July 11, 1867, the total length being about 62 miles, whereas the present length, Sydney to Bourke is 508 miles. The vastly increased business, toegther with the natural fatigue of the material of the bridge and the necessity for two lines of way across the river to complete the duplication of the Western line to Mount Victoria, have neccessitated the building of a new structure.
