A social at the Lithgow Oddfellows Hall featured vocalist George Oates of Penrith. He seems to have pleased the folk up there a good deal, judging by the report in the local paper, which states that his rendition of 'Popsey Wopsey' would have done credit to a crack music-hall artist. Responding to calls, he sang 'The Special Scotchman', another comic, and the paper has it that later in the evening he 'caused roars of laughter with his comic 'The Story of a Kiss'. George White, also of Penrith, was the accompanist.
