Freddie Clawson was known as the Phantom Sheriff because of the way he dodged lead. But near Smoketree, Arizona, he crossed the path of bushwacker Gila Jack Shadmer and his string played out. To Spook Sidlaw fell the task of living up to Freddie's gold star and avenging its original owner. Spook knew that he had been the intended victim and when Freddie's sister asked him to keep the badge until he finished Freddie's job of cleaning up the town, he couldn't refuse. While carrying out his mission, Spook uncovered drug smugglers, rustlers, train robbers, and a lost gold mine, and he was left for dead at least three times. But it took more than a few wounds or cunning murder plots to stop the man who wore the Phantom Sheriff's badge.
