A report of the death of Mr John Woods, late engine driver and hotelkeeper of Penrith. He arrived in NSW over 30 years ago with his friend and long-life chum up to that time, Joseph Palmer, now living retired at Auburn. Both of them served many years as locomotive drivers on the English railways. Both were engaged at Japan for 3 years and then went back to England eventually coming to NSW. They were inseparable friends. Mr Woods married Miss Dawes, a Penrith native. Mr Woods owned a property at Lemongrove, and then bought the licence of the Australian Arms Hotel at Penrith. He later tried hotel and storekeeping, finishing at Parramatta. He gave up and settled at Glebe. Brief details of an 1883 railway accident at Lithgow in which Mr Woods was involved are given at the end of this article.
